New CINAHL Plus Database
The Library is pleased to announce that the CINAHL Plus (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) database from EBSCO Publishing is now accessible University-wide at http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&profile=ehost&defaultdb=jlh. Patrons are encouraged to become familiar with the new CINAHL database, because on July 31, 2006 the CINAHL database from Ovid Technologies, available since 1991, will no longer be accessible.
The reason for the change is EBSCO Publishing acquired Cinahl Information Systems of Glendale, CA, the
producer of the CINAHL database, in 2003 and will no longer make the database accessible from other vendors, such as Ovid Technologies. Since 2003, EBSCO Publishing has made improvements to the database that are not available from Ovid, such as limited bibliographic access to new journal articles as they are being indexed.
CINAHL Plus was chosen to replace the basic version of CINAHL for the following reasons:
- 1,979 Journals Indexed, 144 more than the basic version
- Indexing Began in 1937, as opposed to 1982 for the basic version
- 59 more Journals with Searchable Cited References beginning in 1994, vs. 2000
- Evidence-Based Care Sheets published by Cinahl Information Systems
- 60 CE Modules, as opposed to 3 in the basic version
- 360 Research Instrument Records, as opposed to 106 in the basic version
- Inclusion of Conference Proceedings, Web Sites, Additional Full Text, and 385 Masters
Theses vs. 125 in the basic version.
EBN NOTE: In lieu of the evidence-based nursing filters in the Ovid database, there is an Evidence Based Practice "check box" limiter and the Special Interest: Evidence Based Practice "drop down" limiters on the Advanced Search screen of CINAHL Plus. Either will achieve the same result of limiting your retrieval to
articles appearing in evidence-based journals or indexed with evidence-based subject headings, such as

Guide to Library Collections
Electronic: The full text of 6,000 health sciences journals is available via the "E-Journals" (2) and CALLCAT (1) links on the Library's website and via links from citations in databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus, EMBASE, PsychINFO and Web of Science.
Print: All journals are shelved alphabetically by title. 155,000 volumes published:
- Since 2000 are located on the first floor
- Between 1961 and 1999 are located on the second floor
- Prior to 1961 are located in the lower level
BOOKS & RESERVE MATERIALS
Electronic: More than 200 online books are available via the "E-Books" (3) and CALLCAT (1) links on the Library's website, including Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, Goodman & Gilman's Pharmacology, Hurst's The Heart, leading texts in most specialties, some curriculum texts, 5-Minute Consult titles and encyclopedias.
Print: 70,000 textbooks and monographs are shelved on the third floor according to the National Library of Medicine Classification Scheme. Hundreds of core texts and materials placed on reserve by course instructors are shelved behind the Circulation Desk on the first floor. A "New Book Shelf" is located to the right of the elevators on the third floor.
DATABASES & REFERENCE/CONSUMER HEALTH MATERIALS
Electronic: Databases include MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, BIOSIS, Health & Wellness Resource Center, Internet Catalog, MD Consult, Natural Standard, PsycINFO, UpToDate, Web of Knowledge which includes Current Contents (5-10, 12-13), and other important databases accessible via the "Electronic Databases" link (19) on the Library's website.
Print: Collections of dictionaries, directories, indexes and abstracts, and consumer health resources are located on the first floor. Ask at the Reference/Education Desk for assistance with these resources and for reference materials prior to 1980 which are available upon request.
MULTIMEDIA & AUDIOVISUALS
Multimedia: Images.MD and other web-based resources are accessible via the "E-Images" link (4) on the Library's website. Titles on CD-ROM are located at the Circulation Desk and can be used in the Multimedia Lab at the rear of the first floor.
Audiovisuals: 3,500 videotapes, slide sets and other audiovisual materials are located on the lower level of the Library. They are accessible at the Interlibrary Loan Office and can be viewed there.
SPECIAL & HISTORIAL COLLECTIONS
- Up-to-date, full text information on spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, for both providers and patients, is accessible via the "PoinTIS SCI and TBI" link (15) on the Library's website
- The AIDS Care and Service Providers database is accessible via the CALLCAT link (1)
- The "Special Collections" link (16) features the D. Ralph Millard, MD Plastic Surgery Archive, the Emanuel M. Papper, MD, PhD website, and the full text of the biennial Gross Lecture series by prominent Miami Men of Medicine
Print: Historical books published since 1860, the Dr. Martin B. Raskin Rare Book Collection, the Anderson, Blank, Millard and Schiff Collections and the Archives of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital are located in the Emanuel M. Papper, MD, PhD Reading Room on the third floor and available upon request at the Circulation Desk, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Your UM/JHS ID, Sponsor Associates card, or your ID from a CLASSIC member institution is your Library card. Present your ID to access the Library at no charge, receive in-house rates for fee-based services, and procure services available only to primary clientele, e.g. interlibrary loan services. To borrow materials, you must also register at the Circulation Desk for a
STUDY AREAS & INTERNET CAPABILITIES
Seating & Wireless capability: New, state-of-the-art seating and tables are available on the second and third floors (20). There are hard-wired connections for laptops at the seating in the Emanuel M. Papper, MD, PhD History of Medicine Reading Room on the third floor (21). Access to Medical Information Technology's campus-wide wireless system is available throughout the Library building.
Computers: 37 state-of-the-art hard wired computers are available on a first come, first-served basis on the first floor (22). Five computers with word processing and spreadsheet applications are available in the Multimedia Lab at the rear of the first floor. Six computers with access to the Library's online public access catalog (CALLCAT) are available on the first, second and third floors.
Electronic Classroom: The electronic classroom on the third floor has 20 state-of-the-art computers and a teacher's
workstation. It is available on a first come, first served basis by calling 305-243-5530.
Traditional Classrooms: Two classrooms for groups up to 20 are available on the lower level and may be reserved, on a first come, first served basis, by calling 305-243-6403.
CIRCULATION POLICIES & FINES, PHOTOCOPIERS & PRINTERS (305-243-6403)
Books and audiovisuals: Loan period - Two weeks; Fine - $1.00 per day after the 14th day. (Journals, Reference and Historical Items Do Not Circulate.) You may place a HOLD on any items that have been checked out. The item will be held and you will be contacted when it is returned. A book return is located on the Library patio for the return of materials when the Library is closed.
Photocopiers/Printers: There are 2 photocopiers on the first floor and 2 on the second. There are 2 high-speed printers connected to 37 publicly accessible computers on the first floor. Photocopiers and printers require copicards, available at the Circulation Desk for 10 cents per copy.
REFERENCE & EDUCATION (T: 305-243-6648 F: 305-325-9670)
Assistance locating and retrieving information is available Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Reference Desk and at the Circulation Desk at all other times. Routine searches of health sciences databases are performed for a nominal fee; expert searches are performed at no charge. Self-paced tours of the Library are available at the Circulation Desk and via the Web (17); guided tours are available upon request for individuals and groups. Web-based tutorials are available via the "Educational Tutorials" link (18) on the Library's website; the following courses are available upon request and at no charge:

Assistance in accessing and registering for remote access to the Library's electronic resources (11) is available Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Systems Department on the first floor.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN & DOCUMENT DELIVERY (T: 305-243-6749 F:305-324-4089)
Forms to request items not owned by the Library or to request that copies be made of items in the collections are available in the ILL office on the lower level and on the "Request Forms" link (14) on the Library's website. Items can also be requested via Loansome Doc, Ovid, and fax. Requested items can be picked up, faxed or e-mailed to you. The charge per requested item is $6.00.

Guide to Biomedical Communications Services

High impact scientific posters, business presentations, indoor and outdoor signage, or fine art pieces are created from print materials or digital files. High resolution prints up to 44 inches wide can be produced on most any media of your choice: matte, semi-gloss, luster matte, vinyl, etc., with color fastness up to 100 years. Files can be submitted in a wide array of software programs for layout, imaging, and mounting in time for your poster session, presentation, publication, or event. Assistance with all aspects of design and production is available, including photography and graphic design, scanning, enhancement, enlargement, restoration, storage tubes, mounting and lamination.

Studio Portraits and Passport Photos: Professional quality photographs are conveniently taken in the Studio next to Biomedical Communications on the lower level of the Library.
DIGITAL SCANNING, ENHANCEMENT AND PRINTING
High resolution scans of images in print format, 35mm and 2x2 slide scans, and X-ray images can be enhanced,
converted to PowerPoint presentations, or imaged as high resolution prints or digital files.
Medical Clip Art: Licensed and with copyright clearance for fair use.
UMMSM Archive: More than 1,000 historical and professional quality images of people and places.
Images.MD: Encyclopedia of >50,000 high quality medical images and authoritative text.
