MOVEMENT DISORDERS IN SPINAL CORD INJURY: ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT: MOBILITY: BRACES, CRUTCHES AND WALKERS

-----------------------------

Braces, Crutches, Walkers, and Canes

Some people with SCI are able to walk with the assistance of braces, crutches, and/or walkers. There are two basic styles of crutches: traditional under-arm crutches and forearm, or Canadian-style crutches. The style that is best for you depends on the level of your SCI and your degree of mobility. Walkers are metal frames designed to provide support and stability while walking. Walkers may be folding or fixed; height-adjustable or non-height-adjustable; equipped with wheels on the front, all four, or none of the legs; suited for stairs; and/or equipped with seats. Canes can be four points (often called a quad cane) or single point and aid in balance while walking.
