URINARY TRACT MANAGEMENT IN SPINAL CORD INJURY: URINATION AND THE URINARY TRACT IN SCI: MEDICATIONS AND SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS

-----------------------------

Medications

  • Vitamin C 500mg twice a day helps keep urine acidic

  • Hiprex 1 gram twice a day is a urine antiseptic

  • Oxybutynin (dose varies) is an antipasmodic for the bladder

Antibiotics should not be taken to prevent urinary tract infections, only to treat them.

Surgical Interventions

  • Bladder augmentation is a surgical enlargement of the bladder.

  • Sphincterotomy is a surgical process that weakens the bladder neck and sphyncter muscle to allow urine to flow out more easily. After this surgery, you will urinate involuntarily, and must wear an external device.

  • VOCARE Bladder System is an implanted medical device that is used to restore some bladder and bowel function.

  • Botox injection into the bladder wall can prevent urinary incontinence/leakage.

  • Ileal Conduit is a surgical procedure in which the normal flow of urine is diverted through a small bowell to a collection bag outside of the abdomen. Also called a urostomy.

  • Mitrofanoff procedure is a surgical procedure in which a passageway leading from the bladder to the surface of the abdomen is constructed using tissue from the bowel, appendix, fallopian tube, or ureter segment so that catheterization can be done through the abdomen to the bladder.
