Handbooks for Patients and Providers

The handbooks are a basic source of information. Use these sources before intermediate and advanced sources.

The spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury handbooks include information for patients and providers. Individual provider manuals are included for medicine, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, recreational therapy, speech therapy, and case management. Information about a disease, condition and process serves as a comprehensive, authoritative, readily accessible, and easily updated electronic manual that can be used by the entire rehabilitation team and the patient and family.  Individual manuals are arranged by common topics and may have several subtopics of related information that can be viewed online and printed for future use. Common handbook topics, such as acute stage rehabilitation, skin management, etc., are listed within the manuals and interactively link to corresponding text. The glossary provides brief definitions of terminology used within the patient manual. Example: Information on pneumonia in spinal cord injury appears in both the patient and Sci Medicine manuals.
Common topics are listed on the left side frame of each manual and act as an interactive index. The glossary is located below the common topics index and terms can be located by scrolling up or down the glossary page.
Search, located above common topics, identifies within patient and provider manuals for specific items not readily located in common handbook topics or the glossary. This component of the manuals accepts search queries by entering a term or a subject and cross-references the contents of the manuals and retrieve locations of information needed.
